Google Instant Could Evolve into Ultimate Universal Search

The new Google Instant search reveals streaming Web search results as fast as you type. As awesome as the concept might be, though, the results are confined to the Web. Google has the elements--combining Google Instant with Google Desktop--to develop a universal search capability that can drastically improve productivity.

in a blog post. "The user benefits of Google Instant are many--but the primary one is time saved. Our testing has shown that Google Instant saves the average searcher two to five seconds per search. That may not seem like a lot at first, but it adds up. With Google Instant, we estimate that we'll save our users 11 hours with each passing second!"

That sounds fairly impressive, but how many Web searches does an average user conduct per day? I might search the Web five or ten times a day, but I make my living on the Internet, so I might not be a valid use case. Still, assuming Google Instant can save me three seconds per search, I would save 30 seconds per day, or two and a half minutes per work week--totaling just over two hours a year of time saved.

Granted, that is nothing to sneeze at--especially for large organizations with thousands of employees each saving two hours per year. However, Web search is already pretty snappy, and between Google and Bing I can generally find what I am looking for pretty quick. Finding local data is often a different story, though.

The concept of search at the speed of type isn't new. It's just new to Google Web search. X1 provides instant search results from e-mail, file attachments, local files, calendar events, contacts, archived e-mail, and remote data stores like file servers and Microsoft SharePoint data. Microsoft has a similar search capability built in to Windows 7. The problem with these desktop search capabilities is that they don't include Web search results.

Google Desktop offers comparable local search of e-mail, files, music, photos, chats, Gmail, and previously viewed Web pages, but not the current Web at large. Basically, if a user wants to find a good template for creating a spreadsheet to track project expenses, she will have to conduct separate searches of local data and the Web and correlate the information to find the best option.
What if Google were to combine Google Instant with Google Desktop, though, and create Google Universal? Now, that is an application that can really boost productivity. Google Instant and Google Desktop are both great tools, but a search bar that predictively streams instant results from both the Web and local data stores in a single interface would enable users to function more efficiently and effectively.

Best SEO-Keyword Categories for Blogs

So I was doing some research into the key word val ues for the top ics and cat e gories that are rou tinely cov ered by count less blogs. The results were quite inter est ing — all mar kets reflect the soci eties in which they oper ate, and the online-advertising, PPC mar ket is no different.

For exam ple, take the sub jects that are fre quently dis cussed by the writ ers here at Con sid er ations. I did a Google Adwords search for the top ten most-expensive key words asso ci ated with a topic cat e gory. Then, I cal cu lated the aver age for the top ten. Here are the results:

  • Finance $34.53
  • Busi ness $32.65
  • Mar ket ing $28.67
  • Chris t ian $20.84
  • Dat ing $16.43
  • SEO $16.12
  • TV $14.50
  • India-Rupee $14.20
  • Jewish-Israel $10.38
  • Music $10.35
  • Soc cer $8.96
  • Eco nom ics $8.53
  • Islam $6.56
  • Reli gion $5.85
  • Cul ture $5.84
  • Pol i tics $1.79

The aver ages com prise the top ten key words in the cat e gory. Google, on aver age, charges com pa nies the listed price when ever some one clicks on an online adver tise ment gen er ated by a highly-popular key word in that cat e gory. (Google then pays part of that amount to the web site owner, though the com pany does not dis close how the exact amount is determined.)

The impli ca tions are obvi ous: blog gers and web site own ers who focus on finance, busi ness, and mar ket ing con tent and key words can make a lot more money from online adver tis ing than those who write on reli gion, cul ture, and pol i tics. In a way, this is not sur pris ing — the salaries of people who work in finance and busi ness are much higher than those who work in reli gion or pol itics. It is yet another way in which the online world is becom ing a mir ror image of the offline one.

After all, prices increase when there is more com pe ti tion in a mar ket for a prod uct or ser vice that is per ceived as valu able. Take the Finance cat e gory — I once worked for a forex web site in Israel in which there was intense com pe ti tion to be ranked on the first page of Google search-results. (There are many forex web sites doing the same thing.) The com pany fired a search-engine opti miza tion (SEO) staffer every week because some one was always viewed as not per form ing past 100 percent.

The forex web site gar nered roughly 400,000 page views per month. Say that 0.5% of vis i tors clicked on Google Ads (this is a rea son able click-through ratio). That would be 20,000 clicks. Mul ti ply that num ber times $34.53 aver age price for a top finance key word, and Google’s monthly rev enue from the site was $690,000. The forex com pany would then receive an (unknown) por tion of that amount.

Now, take the same web site traf fic for a polit i cal web site — Google’s monthly rev enue is $35,800 based on the aver age PPC of $1.79.

Finance and forex web sites, of course, are inher ently more valu able in mon e tary terms because the busi nesses aim to make money from exist ing money. Polit i cal web sites are comprised of opin ions that rarely gen er ate rev enue by themselves.

In a sense, the online PPC mar ket resem bles the offline labor mar ket. After all, peo ple work ing in finance earn sig nif i cantly higher salaries than those work ing in pol i tics or religion.

If a web site owner (or worker) wants to earn a lot of money, he will look into finance and business. If a web site owner wants to pur sue his pas sion, he might dis cuss pol i tics and reli gion. But if a web site owner’s pas sion hap pens to be finance and busi ness — well, then, he may strike dig i tal gold.

Seo Training How to Build Backlinks Via Google Alerts

Google Alerts

Google Alerts is a free program run by Google that allows you to keep track of any topic on the web. You select your "keywords" or "urls" and Google will alert you via email whenever links/ content containing your selected topics appear anywhere on the web.

It is an excellent way to keep informed about your domain or name. It is also perfect for keeping up-to-date on the latest information in your market niche or niches. It's also a great way to find out what other people are saying about you or your site.

For example: if you have a site on "antique cars" then you would create a Google Alert for those keywords. Google will alert you by email whenever a new link/content related to those keywords appears on the web.

This is a great way to stay informed in your niche, but it is also a valuable source of potential linking partners. Many of those links are blogs that will allow comments with a link back toyour site.

Google Alerts will probably send you 10-20 links each day, depending on the popularity of your chosen keywords. Just go to these blogs/links and see if you can leave a comment with some valuable additional information on what's been discussed.

Don't Spam

Please Note: Don't spam; there are intelligent people behind most of these blogs, and they will recognize keyword spam when they see it. Your main goal should be getting targeted traffà c back toyour site and any link PR should be secondary. Always put the reader or viewer first, especially if it's on someone else's site. Don't talk aboutyour site or your marketing - just join the conversation and add your comments/opinions/suggestions...
Get Search Engine Rankings You Can Be Proud Of!

Enhance their site and they will reward you with traffic and a link. But you still have to keep your interests in the equation! You have to make sure you get your targetedkeywords in the anchor text.

Keyword Market

First, if you've done your homework, your main keywords should already be in your domain name or url. Another way is to add your "keywords" + "guide" to your sig or signature. Such as: Name, Your Antique Cars Guide. If you're an expert in your particular niche, many webmasters will kindly welcome your comments and links.

Since your main goal is the traffic, many webmasters don't worry if there is a "no follow" attribute attached to the link. But if you are concerned about this - one way is to look at the source code to see if it has the "no follow" tag. I usually copy the whole source code of the page to my text editor and then do a simple "no follow" search.

No Follow

There is also a great little free comment tool called "Comment Kahuna" co-created by Jason Potash which will search blogs and tell you if they have the "no-follow" attribute or not, it will also give you the PageRank of each blog post. If you're going to use blogs as a source of your backlinks, I suggest you try Comment Kahuna - it will make the task much easier and it's free.

Actually, while the "no-follow" issue may be a concern for some webmasters, the savvy ones will realize these are links/sites Google is actively indexing and spidering, otherwise you wouldn't get the alert in the first place. You must get your links into this whole mix of related, relevant sites to help raise your rankings. Also remember the other search engines may not even consider the "no-follow" tag.

Trackbacks

Likewise, creating trackbacks are another way of linking relevant content. Keep in mind, a trackback is simply an acknowledgement via a ping signal that is sent from Site A (originator) to Site B (receptor). Then the receptor often places a link back to Site A showing its worthiness.
Forget Expensive PPC Advertising - There is an Alternative!

Again, I am mainly concerned with the quality of the blog or link, rather than the linking structure. I want the targeted traffà c, and it doesn't really matter whether the link has "no follow" because interested visitors only see a link they can click for other helpful information.

Other Linking Options

Since we are on the topic of link building, another useful way to build backlinks is to use Google Search or Google Blog search. Now if you're looking for niche-related blogs just type in:

"(Keywords)" "powered by (blog scripts)"

For example, if you're looking for some "Seo Training" related links on WordPress blogs, you would search for:

"SEo" "powered by wordpress"

And Google would give you a whole là st of sites on Seo,

Now if you want to find the links that will allow comments, just repeat the Google search with:

"Seo Tips" "powered by wordpress" "leave a comment" -"no comments"

Remember the "-" means posts that have no comments will not be displayed.

If you're concerned with PageRank, Number of Backlinks, Alexa Ranking... of particular posts you can download and install the SEOQuake plugin. This handy SEO plugin can be attached to your browser and will give you helpful SEO information on the link or links you're viewing.

Used in conjunction with Google, it can sort thru all these blog posts and give you the ones with the highest PR? Highest traffic? Highest number of backlinks? The more knowledge you have, the easier and more effective your link building will become.

Just remember, finding quality backlinks is probably the most tedious job for most webmasters. It takes time and it takes patience. By using Google Alerts you can have relevant keyword related links emailed to you each day. Use this information to help build your backlinks in relevant related niches. Do this consistently over a period of time andyour site will get noticed and ranked higher.

* Create some free blogs like wordpress, blogspot and post good content with backlinks to your website. Make sure you stay regular in posting. Thrice a week is okay for posting.
* As we already discussed link building plays a vital role in getting our site out of sandbox, manual directory submissions to quality web directories make a big difference. It pushesyour website out of sandbox.

So create the website that Google simply cannot refuse.

Top reasons to multiple redirected URLs

Friday, June 11, 2010

There are several ways to redirect domains, but, most of them will get you in difficulty with the search engines. The search engine friendly way to redirect URLs is to use what is know as a 301 redirect (you can see how Google and Yahoo! specifically endorse this kind of redirection). Here is my take about the different redirection methods and their implications on search engine optimization:
There are multiple reasons to redirect URLs. For one, your web pages may have moved but their old URLs may still live in users' bookmarks or in search engine indexes. Without implementing some sort or redirection, that traffic would be lost
On occasions, you may also want to register several extensions for your domain name: 'mydomain.com', 'mydomain.net' and 'mydomain.org', and have 'mydomain.net' and 'mydomain.org' automatically redirect visitors to your site, hosted under 'mydomain.com'.

Besides, if your company sells several products, you may want to give each of them an individual domain name, and have it point to a specific subdirectory of your main site. For illustration, if you own a site that sells a product called 'Marketing Made Easy', you may want to set up a domain such as 'marketingmadeeasy.com', and redirect it to subdirectory:

Meta-Refresh JavaScript Redirect

You can redirect visitors by placing a snippet of JavaScript code within the HTML code of the page you want to redirect. With this method, you can specify the number of seconds before the visitor is automatically redirected to the new page. Search engines don't like this method, because of the potential for abuse: you could write an optimized page for a non-competitive search term, and then automatically redirect your unsuspecting visitor to whatever URL you want. For illustration, it could be relatively easy to write a page about English literature, have it indexed and highly ranked by the search engines, and then redirect your visitor to a casino or Viagra site. If search engines allowed this, users would quickly stop trust them. That is why search engines penalize this practice, and why you should avoid it.

Parked Domains

You could register an extra domain name, park it, and make it point to the DNS servers of your main site's hosting account, so that when somebody types the additional domain, they will be transported to your main site. However, this come near may lead to search engines listing the same content twice, one for your main domain, and one for your additional domain. In the past, unscrupulous webmasters would use multiple domains to spam search engines and directories, making them list the same pages hundreds of times under different domains. Even if your intentions are good, we don't recommend this approach to redirecting your additional domains, since search engines may penalize your site for duplicate content.

302 and 301 Redirects

When a request for a page or URL is made by a browser, agent or spider, the web server where the page is hosted checks a file called '.hatches'. This file contains advice on how to handle specific requests and also plays a key role in security. The '.hacks' file can be modified so that it instructs browsers, agents or spiders that the page has either temporarily moved or permanently moved. It is usually possible to implement this redirect without messing with the '.hatches' file directly, using your web host's control panel instead.

From a search engine perspective, 301 redirects are the only acceptable way to redirect URLs. In the case of moved pages, search engines will index only the new URL, but will transfer link popularity from the old URL to the new one so that search engine rankings are not affected. The same behavior occurs when additional domains are set to point to the main domain through a 301 redirect.

The URL Forwarding Feature

Most domain registrars offer a feature called URL Forwarding. With this feature, you can register a new domain, such as 'mydomain.net', and have it point to mydomain.com (or to any other URL). The problem, however, are those registrars usually doing this by implementing a 302 redirect (page moved temporarily). While Google handles 302 redirects very well, passing link popularity from the additional domain to the main one, other search engines don't do this well, diluting link popularity by splitting it between the two domains, and negatively affecting rankings. Therefore, it is improved not to use this method, and implement a 301 redirect instead.
